Garfield High School

Location:
Seattle, Washington
Client:
Seattle Public Schools

The Garfield renovation was the most complex school renovation and addition in Seattle history, and a tremendous success.

The school was reopened on time for the new year despite significant added scope and unforeseen conditions.  It did so because all participants came together with teamwork, innovations, and willingness to go the extra mile.

The main school building was renovated, including a historic restoration of the existing facade, seismic upgrades, and a reconfigured interior – such as locating a new commons atrium where the auditorium was, and converting the existing gym into a library.  New construction included a new gymnasium and performing arts center with the new Quincy Jones Auditorium, plus a new Teen Life Center that is operated by the City.  Also included were a regraded and surfaced sports field and track

The Garfield project was remarkable for:

  • Meeting a tight schedule despite being the largest and most complex school project in Seattle history.
  • A stunning mix of new construction and historic preservation.
  • Great teamwork and esprit de corps.
  • Numerous innovations in design and construction.
  • Sustainability.
  • Cost control through teamwork and innovation during period of global escalation.
  • Excellent safety record.
  • Extensive development of women and minority workers (apprenticeships) and businesses (MWBEs).
